Social effects on foraging behavior and success depend on local environmental conditions
In social groups, individuals' dominance rank, social bonds, and kinship with other group members have been shown to influence their foraging behavior. However, there is growing evidence that the particular effects of these social traits may also depend on local environmental conditions. We investigated this by comparing the foraging behavior of wild chacma baboons, Papio ursinus, under natural...
متن کاملStatus effects on men's reproductive success.
Attempts to gain or maintain status are ubiquitous in human social groups, and are particularly evident among men (1). Status rivalries and maneuvers are a common theme in literaryworks, andof course are amply described and theorized in the social sciences. Sustained analysis of this topic within an evolutionary framework is comparatively recent, although comparable work on dominance in animal ...
متن کاملEffects of early experience on subsequent parental behaviour and reproductive success in oldfield mice, Peromyscus polionotus
Studies of a variety of taxa have almost universally shown an increase in survivorship between the first cohort of young reared by a female (or both parents) and subsequent litters. Here, we examine the effect of early experience with sibling pups during the subadult period on later maternal behaviour and reproductive success in oldfield mice. ‘Experienced’ females remained with their mothers t...
متن کاملComment on "A common pesticide decreases foraging success and survival in honey bees".
Henry et al. (Reports, 20 April, p. 348) used a model to predict that colony collapse in honey bees could be precipitated by pesticide-induced intoxication that disrupts navigation. Here, we show that collapse disappears when the model is recalculated with parameter values appropriate to the season when most pesticide-treated flowering crops bloom.
متن کاملDomestication effects on foraging behaviour - consequences for adaptability in chickens
The main aim of this thesis was to study domestication effects on foraging behaviour in chickens and to investigate whether and how domestication and selection for high production have influenced adaptability in chickens. Two domestic strains of chickens (egg layers and meat type chickens) and their wild ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF) were compared in different test situations with respect...
